Description
There’s something undeniably nostalgic about the world of Harry Potter. Whether you’re re-reading the books, watching the movies on a rainy afternoon, or planning a themed party, the craving for something sweet and magical tends to creep in. And what better way to satisfy that than with Classic Harry Potter Butterbeer Cookies?
The very word Butterbeer brings to mind warm evenings at the Three Broomsticks, the soft hum of laughter, and golden mugs topped with frothy foam. These cookies are a muggle-friendly way to bring a little of that enchantment into your own kitchen. Inspired by the butterscotch-and-cream-soda flavor of the famous wizarding drink, these cookies are chewy, golden, and bursting with buttery caramel notes.
They’ve become a tradition in our house every fall when we binge-watch the Harry Potter films from start to finish. Warm from the oven, they pair perfectly with a cup of milk or homemade hot butterbeer, and they always disappear faster than you’d expect. Whether you’re hosting a Potter-themed party or just indulging in some magical baking on a cozy weekend, these cookies will charm everyone who tries them.
Ingredients
- For the Cookies:
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp butter extract (optional but recommended)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup butterscotch chips
- Optional Butterbeer Glaze:
- 1/4 cup butterscotch chips, melted
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- 1. Cream the Butter and Sugars
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy—about 2 minutes. This creates that melt-in-your-mouth texture we all love.
- 2. Add the Wet Ingredients
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and butter extract (if using). The butter extract gives the cookies that signature Butterbeer flavor, so don’t skip it if you can find it!
- 3. Mix the Dry Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- 4. Fold in the Butterscotch Chips
- Gently fold in the butterscotch chips with a spatula. They’ll melt into the cookie dough during baking and create pockets of sweet, caramel-like flavor.
- 5. Chill the Dough (Optional but Recommended)
- If you have time, chill the dough for at least 30 minutes. This helps the cookies hold their shape and intensifies the flavor.
- 6. Scoop and Bake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scoop out about 1.5 tablespoons of dough per cookie and place them 2 inches apart. Bake for 9–11 minutes, or until the edges are golden but the centers still look soft.
- 7. Add the Butterbeer Glaze (Optional)
- Let the cookies cool completely. For the glaze, melt the butterscotch chips with heavy cream, then whisk in the powdered sugar. Drizzle over the cooled cookies for an extra magical finish.
Notes
Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. The glaze will harden slightly, making them stackable and great for gifting.
