Description
Some recipes carry more than flavor—they carry joy, memories, and celebration. Delightful Churros Poppers are one of those treasures. Inspired by traditional Spanish churros and fused with the playful spirit of street fairs and cozy weekend mornings, these golden bites are small in size but big on comfort.
I remember my first churro at a summer market, handed to me piping hot in a paper cone, coated in cinnamon sugar. It was crisp on the outside, tender inside, and made everything feel festive. Years later, I wanted to recreate that feeling in a form that was easier to serve at family gatherings—enter churro poppers. They’re just as tasty, easier to fry, and perfect for popping straight from the plate to your mouth.
Whether you’re planning brunch, a movie night snack, or a holiday dessert board, these churros poppers are guaranteed to steal the show. You don’t need a piping bag or fancy equipment—just a saucepan, a whisk, and a little cinnamon sugar magic.
Ingredients
- For the dough:
- 1 cup water
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- For frying:
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- For the cinnamon sugar coating:
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- Optional for dipping:
- Chocolate sauce or dulce de leche
Instructions
- Step 1: Make the dough
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, butter, sugar, and salt. Stir until the butter melts and the mixture begins to simmer. - Add the flour all at once and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon. Cook and stir for about 2 minutes until a dough forms and pulls away from the sides.
- Step 2: Let it cool slightly
Remove the dough from heat and let it cool for 5 minutes. This prevents the egg from scrambling when added. - Step 3: Add egg and vanilla
Mix in the vanilla extract, then add the egg. Stir quickly until the egg is fully incorporated and the dough becomes smooth and glossy. It will look separated at first, but keep stirring—it will come together. - Step 4: Heat the oil
In a deep pan or fryer, heat 2–3 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy. - Step 5: Fry the poppers
Using a small cookie scoop or two spoons, carefully drop small mounds of dough (about 1 tablespoon each) into the hot oil. Fry in batches for 3–4 minutes, turning to brown evenly. They should puff up and turn deep golden brown. - Step 6: Drain and coat
Remove the poppers with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels for 30 seconds. While still warm, roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat generously. - Step 7: Serve warm
Serve immediately with chocolate or caramel sauce for dipping, or enjoy them just as they are—warm, crunchy, and full of joy.
Notes
- You can make the dough ahead and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Bring to room temp before frying.
- Leftovers can be reheated in the oven at 300°F for 5–7 minutes to re-crisp.
