Red Velvet Marble Waffles

  • Author: Adaline L.
  • Yield: 6–8 waffles 1x

Description

If weekend mornings had a signature dish, red velvet marble waffles would be it. These beautiful, marbled creations combine the rich cocoa flavor of red velvet with the buttery golden crispness of classic waffles. But they’re more than just eye-catching—they’re the kind of breakfast that turns an ordinary morning into something memorable, whether you’re sharing a slow brunch with family, planning a special birthday surprise, or just treating yourself on a cozy day in.

Red velvet has always carried a sense of occasion. Its deep red hue and subtle cocoa notes have long made it a favorite for celebrations—think Valentine’s Day desserts, festive cakes, or Southern-inspired layer cakes slathered in cream cheese frosting. But folded into a waffle iron, red velvet transforms into something playful yet indulgent: crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and swirled with golden vanilla batter for contrast.

This recipe was born one winter morning when I couldn’t decide between regular waffles and a red velvet treat. So I swirled the two together—and the result was as delicious as it was beautiful. They’ve since become a go-to for brunches, bridal showers, and lazy Sunday mornings when something sweet just feels right.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Vanilla Batter:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Red Velvet Batter:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring (gel or liquid, as needed)
  • Optional Cream Cheese Glaze:
  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk (to thin)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • 1. Make the Vanilla Batter
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla. Pour wet ingredients into dry and stir just until combined. Set aside.
  • 2. Make the Red Velvet Batter
  • In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, vanilla, and red food coloring until smooth and vibrant.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  • 3. Preheat the Waffle Iron
  • Heat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly grease if needed.
  • 4. Create the Marble Swirl
  • Spoon a few tablespoons of the vanilla batter into the center of the waffle iron, then add a few tablespoons of red velvet batter on top or around the edges. Use a toothpick or skewer to swirl gently—don’t overmix or the colors will blend too much.
  • Close the waffle iron and cook until golden and crisp, usually 3–5 minutes depending on your machine.
  • Repeat with remaining batter, swirling as you go.
  • 5. Make the Cream Cheese Glaze (Optional)
  • In a small bowl, whisk together softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth and pourable. Adjust milk for your preferred consistency.

Notes

These waffles are best served fresh, but they freeze well. Simply place cooled waffles in a single layer on a baking sheet, freeze until solid, then store in a zip-top bag. Reheat in the toaster or oven until crisp.
